Jene Conrad

PERSONAL - Jene lives in Elk Grove, California with his wife Kristine and their son, Vincent (4). He works as an art framer in Sacramento and has a graphic design business on the side. Jene started golfing in high school after he got his first job at a driving range.

TIE TO THE MONTEMAR - One day in early 2012, PJ McGloughlin (not in the Montemar, yet) was driving down Newhall street and noticed something that caught his attention. It was Neil Krech printing shirts out of Simon’s garage. Long story short, PJ invited us to move our business from said garage and into the back of All Out Baseball, where he was the Manager and a guy named Tim Wat was the assistant manager. We quickly became buddies with Tim and fast forward many years later, Jon Wat, Tim’s little brother, also a Montemar player, and their dad, were waiting in the school pickup line dressed in their golf gear. Jene realized he had just seen them playing that morning at Emerald Lakes. Shortly after, at a birthday, Jene and Jon met up again and a golfing connection was born, and we add another good one to the Montemar.

Jene seems like a really good dude, makes sense as we got him from Jon, and is donating one of the most creative prizes in Montemar history. He seems like a great family man as well, one who loves to golf, and another great addition to this tournament. Hoping we keep Jene around for many years to come.

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR - Last year Jene donated what I thought was the coolest prize of the tournament… A customer built framed Montemar keepsake that became our rookie of the year prize. Would be great if he could do it again and make a tradition out of it. I can help out if cost is an issue.

WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2024 - Had he taken his dad’s advice as a kid and joined the high school golf team, Jene may be somebody on my radar as a potential dark horse to sneak in here and do some damage as a rookie. He ignored his dad’s advice, as did I, and because of this, Jene will join myself and many others just showing up and hoping for a respectable finish. Kevin Kisner has made a living doing this on tour and it still makes for a pretty awesome life. To have a respectable showing, Jene will need to make sure his Iron game is dialed in for the Par 3s. He’ll need some luck with the random stuff and the draft. Sometimes not knowing many can really help him the draft. His scramble team should be solid and is built near perfect for the format we’re rolling out this year.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN 2024 - Last year we said the scramble team was built near perfect but that was heading into the first year in this format. Even I learned some things last year and, while the team seemed like a perfect fit, it actually lacked one thing. That team should have traded Velez or DeSantis for an absolutely high handicap. An Ian Youngblood of sorts. Jene as an individual was steady in his first trip to the Montemar, doing nothing spectacular but proving he can navigate around a golf course. Hitting the Par 3s was a pre tournament point of emphasis and Jene struggled there, only landing one in 13 attempts.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2025 - Last year Jene was in the unfortunate spot of being a rookie and playing in a tougher division. This year things will be much friendlier. His 28 handicap for 2025’s opening round is twice what he went to Idaho with. Jene needs to lock in those Ping 2 eyes and hit at least one green on par 3s per round. He also needs to piggy back off Jon’s brain and make sure he doesn’t miss any easy points. If Jene can do those things there’s no reason he can’t crack his first top 10.

 ODDS TO WIN – 110-1

FUN FACT – Jene will be playing with some of the oldest clubs at the Montemar. He still swings the old Taylormade super steel bubble shaft woods and Ping Eye 2 irons.
