Nathan Udy

PERSONAL – Nate lives in Natomas, CA with his wife Eleni. During the week he is an auditor and appraiser for the State of California. On Sunday mornings he works as a cashier at my golf course, Bartley Cavanaugh. Nate has played golf casually since he was a kid.

TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – Nate’s tie to the Montemar is very simple and linear. He’s worked at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course for 21 years. When he first started it was a school job and now he works once per week to keep his golf perks. When I got the job at Bartley we became buddies. Simple as that. We are similar in age and like-minded people. Nate has been stoked about the idea of a buddies golf trip since the very second I mentioned the idea.  He’s been a great person to bounce ideas off of and we literally talk about the Montemar every Sunday morning. Nate is a phenomenal guy who will be a great member of this group for many years to come.

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – Nate has done a ton. In addition to the two boxes of ProV1s and all the idea collaboration, Nate is the official scorekeeper of the Montemar. You’ve all seen glimpses of how the scoring and point system will work for this thing, of some of the different ideas my brain comes up with, stuff that is way to complex for software like Golf Genius. Nate is the man in charge of building a spreadsheet to make all this work and he’s getting very close. He’s already updated the sheets for the 80 golfers we’ll have this year. Please make sure to thank him and buy him a beer as he’s busy working after each of our rounds. This isn’t possible without him.

WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN 2023 – Nate needs to take advantage of his free golf perks and work from home state job and actually start playing golf. He should be able to spend the month of May on golf courses, either on the course, at the range, or the short-game facilities and find a way to shave 10 strokes off his game. The ability is there, he’s got a generous handicap, and good payment points, if he can fine-tune a few things he should be a contender come Sunday.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED 2023 – All the practice didn’t help him and he came out and performed worse than he had in 2022 – 101 and 95, which are both worse than any rounds I’ve ever played with the guy. Nate’s got the game to be mid-eighties all day but tends to put added pressure on himself – and blow up – when the bright lights come on the big stage.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2024 – Nate needs to get in a zone Saturday morning and show up to Circling Raven with his inflated handicap and no care in the world. If he continues to stay in that zone throughout the round, his mind should never be clear enough to let the nerves get to him, allowing him to play his game and put up major points on the first day of the Tourney. Sounds like he’s got some ringers coming to town and if he pairs things up right for the scramble, while continuing to lock in on the task at hand, there’s no reason to think he can’t be in it come Monday.

 ODDS TO WIN 28-1

FUN FACT – Nate has a striking resemblance to Billy Ray Cyrus. It’s not easy to see at first but once you see it you will never unsee it.
