Kevin Hancock
PERSONAL – Kevin lives in Poulsbo, Washington with his wife Erin and their two boys – Nolan (18) and Carson (14). He’s been a mortgage loan officer and CFP for 20 years and is licensed in Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona. Kevin started golfing when he was 12 but never took it seriously before he started playing in a league and men’s club 8 years ago. Like most of us, he’s still not as good as he’d like to be.
TIE TO THE MONTEMAR – Kevin is from my home-town of Poulsbo, Washington, but he’s a few years older and I’m not sure that I’ve ever met the guy. He’s got a name and face that sounds and looks so familiar but I’m having a very hard time putting my finger on it. That said, he’s been buddies with Jay Cleveland since they were kids and became better friends with him when they got to college. The two were in the same fraternity at WSU – GO HUSKIES!
Kevin enjoys boating, golfing, family ski trips, and coaching/watching his kids play sports – soccer, flag football, baseball, basketball, wrestling. His home course is Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Washington and happens to be the course where I sort of learned to play golf way back in my younger days.
He seems like a fantastic guy/dad/husband/friend who loves sports and golf and makes another wonderful addition to the Montemar.
ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR – Kevin has always come through with something good for the prize pool. Hoping he does again.
WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2024– I’m hoping for a lot more of the same. Kevin was a blast to hang out with and rallying for four days is what this tournament’s all about. This year he’ll have the benefit of a generous returner’s handicap which should help get him in the top half after the opening round. That’s what it’s designed for. He’ll also have the benefit of playing on what is almost home turf. The man went to school in Pullman, which is 50 minutes from our hotel and Circling Raven, although he’s so old Circling Raven probably didn’t exist when he was there. It will be great to see Kevin again and see what he can do.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPPENED IN 2024 – Much like his buddy Jay, Kevin was hurt in 2024 by his group failing to turn in two scorecards on time for two of the three rounds. The 40 points lost was in difference in close to 30 spots dropped on the leaderboard. Idaho sealed the deal for Kevin’s reputation as the most consistent golfer in the Montemar. His 95 and 99 were 2 strokes different than his 97 and 99 in Scottsdale.
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2025 – Consistency is great if you’re in the low 80s and, although he hasn’t shown it, I believe Kevin has that ability. He’s got two months to shave a stroke a hole and if he does he’s going to have his first ever top ten finish. If he doesn’t, he’ll be a great choice for somebody’s scramble team. The high handicap combined with the ability to hit all the shots occasionally makes him a very valuable lose your club scramble player. This will be his last Montemar in his 40s. Can he take advantage of his youth before everything starts going to shit?
ODDS TO WIN – 75-1
FUN FACT – Kevin was the only witness to Jay’s hole-in-one 20 years ago. He’s witnessed two other aces in his life but is still waiting on his first. I’ve got a feeling it’s coming at the Montemar.
