Greg Mena
PERSONAL - Greg lives in Brentwood, California with his wife, Roni. They have a son named Brett (21) and twin daughters, Lindsey and Isabelle (20). Greg is an electrician for the city of Brentwood and has played a lot of golf lately due to his kids getting older. His golf game has improved immensely the past two years.
TIE TO THE MONTEMAR - Everything for us and the McGhie’s and their friends shoots back to Hooters. You’ll have to go back in and read Drew’s profile for the rest of that info but for now we’ll focus on how the McGhie’s know Greg. They all met him when the younger McGhie’s were in middle school and when Luke, who’s approaching ancient in years, was in high school. Luke and the McGhie’s spent a lot of time with Greg in their 20s, frequenting places like the Peacock lounge and Hooters and having a lot of fun while watching and talking about sports. I met Greg at Drew’s tournament this summer and he’s seemed like a great and fun guy who makes another great addition to this tournament.
ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MONTEMAR - Since Luke wanted to do Greg’s profile, I don’t think I ever got a shot to ask that man. That said, the more prizes we have the more fun. Hopefully he comes up with something cool. Let me know.
WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN 2024 - Greg’s single digit handicap puts him in the top 10% of the field. That said, we’ve got some things built in to stop rookies from stealing our jacket and Greg will have to play lights out while using Luke to help him in navigating all the little intricacies of our scoring system in order to have a shot at taking home the corduroy. The better players do have a big advantage with the par 3s, but he’ll still need to catch some luck with the random pairings and draft. I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict a 16th place finish for Greg in his first Montemar. If he sticks around in 2025, I think we’ll see Greg in the top 10.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN 2024 - Greg played well enough to take a stab at his inaugural Montemar. He forget to get Luke’s advice on some little things otherwise he would have walked away with a top 3 finish in his first ever trip. 29 points lost to scorecard and photo mishaps aren’t the way to win a jacket. Greg was great to get to know, a very solid player, and makes another great addition to this tournament.
WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2025 - Greg will be a force if he gets all the little things right. His game was a little better at the beginning of the tournament and this year he’ll get two rounds on day 1. Greg has the advantage of being a returner and will be playing the opening round with the 14 handicap he earned in round 1 last year. If he can get out to a big lead, catch a little rest on Saturday, there’s no reason he can’t be in great contention for a jacket on Sunday. I like Greg as a darkhorse pick for this one.
ODDS TO WIN - 16-1
FUN FACT - Luke said some things in Greg’s initial profile that are better left off the internet.
